I’m doing this art assignment about my personal library to see what I can discover about myself based on the titles I own. I don’t really have just one home - well, there’s the place where I live during the academic year, in Curitiba, and the place my mom lives and I come to visit every holiday, in São Paulo, so my books are kinda messed up between different cities. The fact that I’ve been studying abroad for the past year also adds something to this mess… I own several books in Portuguese, obviously, and since the Brazilian title isn’t always a literal translation I’ve actually written the meaning of them after the photos. I just hope this makes sense to non Portuguese speakers as well. Anyway, here is what I came up with:
"When Did You See Her Last?", by Lemony Snicket
Saturday, by Ian McEwan
One Day, by David Nicholls
Not to Forget, by Clarice Lispector
This One Summer, by and
My Heart Wanders, by Pia Jane Biijkerk
Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer
To Live a Great Love:, by Vinicius de Moraes
Little Joys, by Hermann Hesse
Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens
I think this last one doesn’t quite work the same in English as it does in Portuguese, but I hope you can still get it :)
This was really fun to do! And I’m kinda scared about how this could work as my portrait… I mean, I think these three stacks do mirror myself (the second one most of all) and some of my personality, but it would be weird to think about someone making assumptions about me based on them. It was a really good exercise to go trough my bookshelves and remember some titles, though.
Possibly my favourite photograph.
